One of our travelers, Debbie M., was on an assignment in Alaska. Here is a little peek into her travel experience in Sitka, AK….
“I have been in Sitka, Alaska now for two months and it’s the best thing I’ve ever done regarding my career. I know!!! ALASKA FOR MY FIRST TRAVEL ASSIGNMENT, RIGHT? I’m 64 years old and in December I decided to quit my full-time job and become a travel RT. Fortunately, I was lucky enough to get the best recruiter anyone could hope for, Bethany Evans. I mean, gosh, there are so many bad stories about “not so good” recruiters and agencies and then I end up with this extraordinary experience my first time. I feel like I’ve known Bethany for years. She texts me and checks on me regularly and is always so quick to help resolve any issues or concerns.
Sitka is a small island with one road that runs 14 miles from end to end. I drive 1.2 miles to work each day (how about that for a commute?). The facility here is so unique because it’s only 25 beds, but it serves all medical needs for several outlying islands besides just Sitka. I’ve learned so many new things here, and new ways of thinking about the services we provide in this amazing location. I can’t say enough about how wonderful and welcoming the people at Mt. Edgecumbe Medical Center have treated me during my visit. Every morning before work and every evening after work, I sit by the shore in Sitka Sound and watch the seals, whales, and the many varieties of birds, all surrounded by a snowcapped mountain backdrop. The pictures I sent represent some of the beautiful scenery I’m so lucky to enjoy. And never did I think I would be in a part of the world where I would get to see the Northern Lights, but I have in Sitka.
Recently, a group of clinicians, RN’s, CNA’s, PT’s and OT’s, invited me to go with them by boat to a luxury hunting and fishing lodge on Dove Island for a Michelin 5-star dinner. When we arrive, we will first be escorted to the spa where we will receive massage therapy, then we will go to their bar for cocktails where we will enjoy a spectacular view of the Pacific Ocean. Next, we will be served our fabulous dinner (go to the Dove Island website and see for yourself). And for dessert…..wait for it…..BAKED ALASKA IN ALASKA!!!!
I wish I had done this sooner, but I’m definitely going to be a travel RT for the remainder of my career.”
